How to compare noise in a room

A useful room comparison starts with a repeatable setup. Keep the phone, microphone route, position, settings and observation duration consistent, then change one condition. Treat an unadjusted Still result as a digital microphone observation, not a calibrated room SPL value.

Record more than a number

Write down open windows, ventilation, nearby activity and the time of day. A passing vehicle or conversation may explain a large change. If conditions were not comparable, keep both records but label the difference rather than claiming an improvement.

Understand quiet-room limitations

The microphone's own noise, room reflections and handling noise can influence a quiet measurement. A lower reading is not automatically a more accurate one. Use a suitable reference and method when the question requires an absolute sound-pressure value.

Try a repeatable approach

1. Mark a repeatable phone position.
2. Measure a baseline and the changed condition for comparable intervals.
3. Record interruptions and repeat if the source varies.
